FAQ:
Stewardship?
Simply put, it is a way of living. It is living a God centered life – not a
self centered life.
Who is a steward?
Simply put…anyone who lives their baptismal vows. According to the U.S.
Bishops, a good steward is one who embodies 4 specific qualities:
v
Grateful:
thanking God daily for the blessings received. A good steward never stops
saying “thank you’.
v
Responsible:
with the blessings God has bestowed. Stewardship means taking care of and
developing all God’s gifts. Every blessing must be used and developed so it
does not wither away. Any talent is a gift from God. It must be nurtured,
developed and used to give thanks.
v
Sharing:
comes from knowing it is better to give than to receive. The gift of faith
is God’s gift to share….parents when they nurture the children’s faith is
sharing. Anything that we enjoy doing; anything that we are good at is a
talent, a blessing, to be shared.
v
Accountable:
When the moment of judgment comes, will our actions reflect beneficial uses
of all God’s blessings? Can we say “Lord, I tried to thank you every day. I
tried to be responsible with those gifts and share them with others.”? May
He respond, “Well done, good and faithful servant…. Enter into the joy of
your master.” Mt 25:21
In the spirituality of
Stewardship, we use the terms time, talent and treasure.
v
Time. More precious than any
other gift. Every day, every hour is precious. A good steward uses time as
an opportunity to serve the Lord and to build up His Kingdom. We are
challenged to plan a careful schedule in order to have the time to work, to
rest, to play and to pray.
v
Talent. It has a two fold
purpose to a steward. Yes, it is sharing of self by helping in the parish
and community. It is also the passion that people have for doing what is
good. In bringing passion to all that they do, stewards make a difference.
v
Treasure. How much does a good
steward need to give? Nothing. This is probably the most misunderstood
concept of stewardship. Certainly our parish needs our support but
stewardship of treasure is not about giving to a need; rather, it is about
the need to give. The treasure we have is a gift from God. We do not have
to give a certain percentage to the Church. A good steward asks: “How much
do we want to give?”
We are challenged to be
good stewards not only in how much we give, but in what we do with all our
resources. A steward is one who receives God’s gifts gratefully, cherishes
and tends them in a responsible and accountable manner, shares them in love
with others and returns them with increase to the Lord. Simply put…. It is
living a God centered life.
